My #PitchWars Mentor Wish List
Hi!! I'm so, so happy you're here!
So first off, yes I love Supernatural. Maybe we can chat about it and share fun gifs? (I have a bit of an addiction to gifs.) ;) I'm also binge watching Revenge. For the second time. So you may get some of those gifs, too. =)
(P.S. If you have an MS akin to either of these shows, GIVE THEM TO ME!)
A Little About Me
I was a proud 2016 Pitch Wars Mentee with my YA Sci-Fi Romance - the novel that found me my wonderful agent. (But it did take 50 rejections to finally find her.) It was a story I never imagined pulling out from the pile of my failed MSs. I NEVER thought I'd get picked. Just goes to show that anything can happen, and you should enter NO MATTER WHAT! Aaand in the meantime, after (what felt like endless) years of querying, I finally landed a contract with Entangled Publishing (through #PitMad)! My debut novel, THE HEARTBEAT HYPOTHESIS, a NA contemporary romance, released this past March. I also sold my YA romantic magical realism to Entangled. TO WHATEVER END releases early next year.
Basically, I write contemporary and SFF/Magical Realism novels. Heart-stopping romance, rule-breaking heroes, and everyday magic. =)
Though I love to read a lot of other genres!
THE HEARTBEAT HYPOTHESIS
Audra Madison simply wanted to walk in the shoes of Emily Cavanaugh, a free-spirited teenager who died too young. After all, Audra wasn’t supposed to be here. Thanks to Emily, Audra has a second chance at life. She’s doing all the things that seemed impossible just two years ago: Go to college. Date. Stargaze in the Rocky Mountains. Maybe get a tattoo. You know, live. Jake Cavanaugh, a photographer with mysterious, brooding gray eyes, agrees to help chronicle her newfound experiences. She makes him laugh, one of the only people who can these days. As they delve into each other’s pasts – and secrets – the closer they become. But she’s guarded and feels like she can’t trust anyone, including herself.
And he’s struggling with the fact that his beloved sister’s heart beats inside her.

As your mentor, I promise to be there for you at all times, to answer your late night questions and to keep you from jumping off the ledge. I want a connection - and hey, maybe we'll become the best of friends. (Like I did with my 2016 Mentor, Judi Lauren. Guys, she's amazing!)
I can help with plot holes, stilted dialogue, pacing issues, increasing the romance, and so much more! (Like issues with tags and beats, tense shifts, etc.)
I'll go through your MS twice. You'll get a big-picture edit letter and then another round with track changes and in-line comments. Together we'll make your query and MS shine! And you will find an agent eventually. If it's not with the awesomeness of this MS, then maybe with the next one. If I pick you, I BELIEVE IN YOU.
As my mentee, be prepared for this wild, crazy ride. It'll be a lot of hard work, but we'll have tons of fun in the process! If I pick you, you're basically stuck with me forever. =)
Let's take a break from talks about me. This is what you really want to know:
My Wish List
I'm mentoring YA/NA, so if your MS is either, YAYYY! Gimme all your swoon-worthy romance, tortured heroes, witty banter, and plot twists that make me go WHOA. I love a story that explores the darker aspects of humanity - so if your story is gritty, dark, and dangerous, send it my way! And if you have a fabulous anti-hero or enemies to lovers story, I want it! (My debut was basically dubbed "Too Dark For Hallmark".) So I'm clearly not afraid of the dark stuff! I also love a light-hearted story, so don't fret if your story isn't dark, or doesn't include romance. I love a wide range of books, some of them having no romance whatsoever. Some light. Some dark. Basically, if your book can make me laugh out loud, gasp in horror, or just keep me turning pages, I want it. (Bonus points if you can rip my heart out then mash it back together, all while making me cry.)
I'm simply looking for a story with voice and an enticing plot!
This has become my new favorite genre to write - and read! I love a contemporary setting with just that small hint of magic that makes the world unreal. Magical realism, to me, is so awesome in that you can do whatever you want as long as you do it well. The questions of how don't always need to be answered in these stories. (And look! Half of my favorites aren't a romance.)
Some of my favorites:
- The Catastrophic History of You and Me by Jess Rothenberg
- Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver
- September Girls by Madison Bennett
- The Walls Around Us by Nova Ren Suma
I love to write and read a near-future science fiction novel. More towards the light sci-fi side - no space operas or otherworldly plots.
Aside from my love of artificial intelligence, I'm a huge fan of alternate universes, sexy aliens, and stories about what happens when that line of science goes just a bit too far - whether it be in a good or bad way.
A few of my favorites:
- The Lux Series by Jennifer L. Armentrout
-The Altered Series by Jenn Rush
- Unraveling by Elizabeth Norris
- Reboot by Amy Tintera
- Infinity by Jus Accardo
- 3:59 by Gretchen McNeil
Like I said, I love to swoon, laugh, and cry. For NA, please give me a story that breaks the overused mold (and maybe my heart?) that has unfortunately given new adult its bad rap. I want to see something unique. Something inspiring. For YA, I basically want the same. I'm serious grabby hands for an amazing love story!
Some of my favorites:
- November 9 by Colleen Hoover
- The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith
- Losing It by Cora Carmack
- Stripped by Brooklyn Skye
- P.S. I Like You by Kasie West
Fantasy - Light/Urban/Paranormal Fantasy
When it comes to fantasies, I don't like high fantasy. (Sorry!) I prefer a contemporary setting or a slightly fantastical setting, and I still enjoy some of the "overdone" trends and tropes - as long as they're done a bit differently. I'm especially fond of romance plots with these - but they're not a necessity.
A few favorites:
- Delirium by Lauren Oliver
-Wicked by Jennifer L. Armentrout
- Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick
- My Soul to Lose (Soul Screamers Series) by Rachel Vincent
I need a unique plot and an immensely interesting character in a contemporary book. I lean more toward the dark side of life in this genre, but I'm not opposed to lighter stories. =)
Some of my favorites:
- Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock by Matthew Quick
- I Hunt Killers (Jasper Dent Series) by Barry Lyga
- Liars, Inc. by Paula Stokes
- Send by Patty Blount
The only things I absolutely do not want are Historical anything and High Fantasy/Extreme Sci-Fi. I'm open to everything else!
